Question for those who feed their cats vegetarian diets?

December 16th, 2009 | by Diet Advisor |
julie asked:

I’ve asked a couple of questions about this, and I noticed that everyone who suggests cats should eat meat is getting thumbs down. Yet no one is giving an answer as to why it is advisable to feed a vegetarian diet to a carnivore. So I was wondering if those who are opposed to feeding their cats meat will please come forward and state their reasons for feeding a vegetarian diet to a cat. Thanks.
Okay, I’m still waiting to hear from those who approve of a vegetarian diet for cats. Why aren’t they speaking up?

I don’t know if there’s anyone opposed to feeding their cats meat. They’re supposed to eat meat. And not just house cats, the big cats like lions. They live on meat. The only vegetable I know that they eat is grass.

What part of carnivore don’t you understand?
Cats evolved on a strictly all-meat diet. Anyone who owns a cat knows that their bodies are perfectly adapted for hunting. Cats require many nutrients that can only be found in meat. Cats cannot digest vegetation. Cats cannot synthesize many of the nutrients that most other mammals can.
Putting your cat on a vegetarian diet can cause irreversible problems to its health; including, blindness, weight loss, paralysis, brain damage, and death.

Forcing a cat into a vegetarian diet is animal cruelty.

If you’re asking this question on a vegetarian board, of course many people are going to tell you to feed your cat a vegetarian diet. If you go on the cat board, you’ll likely be told that cats don’t need vegetables at all. I agree with the latter.

It’s supposed to be for a better health but… you can find all kind of cruelties out there.

Cats are carnivores, like lions and tigers, they need enzymes only found in meat and fish.
People who say dogs are carviours are wrong, they are meat preferring omnivores but will eat anything.
people often get these facts confused.
If you don;t want to have anything to do with meat you shouldn;t keep a cat, have a dog or a horse or a bunny or something.

My cat is 11 years old and has missing teeth (from a car accident) would it be kind for me to give her a radical diet change that wouldn’t be good for her?? No.

I am concerned with the individual, my pets are other peoples write offs and my responsibility is to them.

A radical vegan (like a radical anything) will thumb down veg*ns who say they feed their pets meat.
I feed her fish, she is healthy.

Even though I have conformed to a vegan diet (for health reasons), I would never under any circumstances put my animals through that. I can clearly balance my foods to get enough protien and vitamins, but cats don’t eat vegetables. I agree that is animal cruelty because if they are anything like my pets, they would rather starve than eat veggies. Well, they DO eat grass, but they only eat that when they want to throw up because of a stomach ache because their stomach won’t digest it. Just because certain people make choices to eat a certain way, they shouldn’t force their choices onto creatures of nature.

I personally don’t feed my cats a veggie diet (I answered your other Q). I feed my animals what ever their body is programmed to eat (in the form of dried food and some fresh). I think anyone who deprives their animals of that, are cruel people. I am a Vegetarian (In the attempts of becoming Vegan) But I am, because I personally don’t need meat to live. I’m not against the food chain, nature, or people who eat meat. I think keeping a carnivorous animal away from meat is going against nature.

The main problem with a cat being vegetarian is Taurine. Taurine is most bioavailable in meat. Without this, a cat will die a slow and disgusting death.

There are some vegetarian foods that supplement this with a vegetarian source. While the people who feed this may not be on Yahoo! Answers justifying their choice to feed this food, they do exist.

Here’s a whole list of Vegetarian cat foods:
