What is your motivation for dieting and exercising?
May 29th, 2010 | by Diet Advisor |Jillian asked:
I had a baby 2 years ago and I still have 15 pounds to lose. I just cannot get motivated. Bathing suit and short season is almost here and I still can’t find inspiration.

Just curious what your motivators are.
Thanks for all the good answers. Every day I tell myself, I’m going to start eating right today. I never do. I let myself eat junk and the same amount of calories every day

My motivation is:
1. Healthy food tastes good.
2. Exercise feels good.
3. I sleep well when I exercise.
4. I feel confident when I exercise.
5. I LOOK good.
6. I can play with kids and do all sorts of things without tiring out.
7. TV’s boring anyway, so I am engaged by going outside.
8. People like me because I believe in myself and I never criticize my body (Big irritation. Fat people, shut up and stop eating at McDonald’s. Just do the work.)
9. My body is important to me and I want it to work as well as possible. Why would I trash my very being with fatty, nasty food and laziness?

The best thing is some music that really pumps you up. Also looking at other people who are in really good shape and seeing how successful they are is another big motivation for me anyways

Personally for me it’s always easier to get motivated when you have a friend with you.
I think I lose about 20% more weight with a buddy than I do alone. I’m totally making up that number but I know I lose more with a friend than I do alone.
Only thing is, you have to have a buddy that is equally, if not more, dedicated than you. I have a friend that wants to lose about 5 lbs but she will work out about once or twice a month and stuff her face with sweets every day-and when she does work out she never pushes herself.
So basically, make sure you have someone that is serious about it. That way you can be responsible for making them go workout and vice versa.
Another I do, since i absolutely **** running, is running in a neighborhood and racing mailboxes. Hah, it sounds ridiculous doesn’t it? But I run until I get past three mail boxes.
Or I take my dog and I promise myself I won’t stop running until they do. It works though because I have a border collie who never stops.
Sorry this is long but I still have one more thing to say-
dieting. Well, never say diet, you’re setting yourself up for failure that way.
Just choose healthier foods. When going to choose foods, I think about what I’m going to feel like afterward. For example, I just ate a piece of Easter Candy (I don’t eat that much so it lasts me a while) and now I feel kinda gross and lazy.
Earlier when I had an apple and a sandwich with lots of Veggies, I felt like I could go for a run afterward and I had lots of energy.
Try for some good tips as well.
I hope I helped.. stick to it and get a buddy, you can do anything you put your mind to. Just believe it!

my motivations are:
1. I want to live a healthy and long life. and I don’t want diabetes and stuff.
2. Summer! bathing! I hated the fact that last summer I was so insecure about my own body that I didn’t swim or tan at all..
3. I want to look good for my boyfriend and my friends! They don’t push me, I just feel that I want to look good for them!
4. Exercise feels good.
5. I feel good when I know I’ve burned calories.
6. I’m looking forward to seeing the results I’m looking for

You actually said it yourself bathing suit and short season is almost here. I find the best way to spend the morning is with my two year old in the jogger stroller and run/walk for 45 minutes then we stop at the park so we can play together. Healthy for both of you!!

The motivator that works for me is the concept that each day I delayed or cheated, was a day lost in my life plan. So, for me anyway, I thought in terms of days lost rather than pounds lost. I lost 70 pounds and have remained at my correct weight of 165. That was 20 years ago. Since you are younger, I would add the obvious point that your task is going to be easier now than even 5 years from now. This is offered as a possible motivator; but, motivation is such a personal factor.
