How much weight can you safely lose in one week, by dieting and exercising?
July 28th, 2010 | by Diet Advisor |gemsjay asked:
I was watching the Biggest Loser on NBC and saw that one girl lost 20lbs. She weighed 225 and went down to 205 in one week. Is that possible? Or even safe?

Losing weight is a simple equation: if you burn more calories than you eat, the weight will come off. Start off by estimating how many calories you burn each day using the calorie calculator This will give you an idea of how many calories to eat. Healthy weight loss is 1-2 pounds per week. To lose 1 pound per week you need to create a calorie deficit (burn more than you eat) of 500 calories per day. To lose 2 pounds a week, you have to double the deficit to 1000 calories per day. You can achieve this by eating less, exercising more or a combination of both.

i think it probably is. she was pretty big before imagine if she was a big soda drinker or fast food eater. those can pack on thousands of calories. she wont be able to lose 20 every week tho. i believe 2-3lbs a week is recommended as safe. slow and steady wins the race right!!!

She lost water weight, soon gained back. Experts tell you that you can safely lose no more than three lbs. safely per week, preferably two. More weight loss or less is mostly always a water adjustment, because some of the fat loss is converted to water, and some of it is burned as energy.

From the numerous books, classes and research I’ve done truthfully only 1 - 2 lbs a week is truly healthy. Anything faster than that and you run the risk of losing muscle.

The most weight you should lose in a week (safely) is about 4 pounds. Thats even a lot. However, the heavier you are, the easier it is to lose weight because it takes more energy to do things and the more energy you lose the more calories you burn, the more calories you burn the more you sweat, and the more you sweat, the weight you lose. But even 20 pounds for someone who weighed 225 is quite unsafe, your body is not built to have such large changes occur… thats about 10 percent of her body weight… not good.

ummmm….keep in mind that she prolly hasnt had any physical activity in awhile..and she was prolly someone who drank and ate alot of fatty things…so with the change in her diet and the hard-core exercising, loosing 20lbs in the first week would be expected…but watch…she will prolly only loose a few each week from this point on…thats how it usually goes…i know that as soon as i start to work out everyday i can loose about 10 lbs in aweek..thats just how my body works…thats the first week..then usually i can loose about 1-4 the next few weeks….anyways if you want to loose weight do it the safe and heathy way…watch ur fat intake and exercise…bust a bust!

You must remember the people on The Biggest Loser work out 3 times a day, every day for 3 months. They also are on diets. They are also very over weight and never work out so the slightest workout causes dramatic weight loss. It’s possible. However in the real world, no fancy machinery at our finger tips, diet coaches, and a big grand prize for the biggest loser, a healthy weekly weight loss would be 1-3 pounds a week. Five pounds would be a lot, 10 pounds every couple weeks might happen. It’s not safe, nor actually possible to lose 20 pounds a week every week, unless you were hundreds of pounds overweight. Your body needs time to adjust to the weight loss. If you actually watched every show of the biggest loser, you’ll see that people lose an average of 5-7 pounds a week, if they lose near the 20 pounds range it often happens at the beginning of the season. Then the following week they lose near to nothing. Don’t think that its actually possible to consistently lose 20 pounds a week.

It depends really on the amount of exercise you do and most of all, your dieting. If you are thinking of losing some weight, you should know that 15% of your weight-loss program depends on excercise and 85% depends on your diet. To lose 1kg of your weight (2.2lb aprox) you’ll need to burn about 3500 calories for each kg. So, if you were to lose 20 pounds in a week you should be burning about 9975 calories per day for seven days. Considering the fact that you mantain a diet of 2000 calories per day you will have to be in a great physical condition to achieve this plan. You do the math, and you’ll see that it is impossible to lose that amount of weight in a week. Even if you did a one-week-fasting you will only lose 3.8kg (10 pounds) the whole week. To burn the remaining 10 pounds you’ll need to do, as I previously said, A LOT OF EXCERCISE. : )
