Do teens need to worry about calorie-counting and dieting?

Jason asked:

I am a 17 year old teen and I think I am a bit overweight. Should I consider calorie-counting and dieting or is it too early for this at my age?

I think after say 15 it is OK— as long as you are done with puberty.
You still may have that self-conciousness that teen girls have (if you are one), so watch that.
Don’t get obsessed with weight, though.
Just eat a balanced diet and excercise like 1/2 hour to an hour a day and you will be fine. so you can see if you are overweight first.

Absolutely. If you are over weight and out of shape I highly recommend dieting. When I say diet I mean changing the way you eat, not having you starve yourself. Try eating more fruits and vegetables. You should defintiely exercise too. Exercise is half of the process of losing weight. Do that and you should have great results! Good luck!

not so extreme as calorie-counting, but you should just keep track of what and how much you’re eating. at 17, your body is taking its final shape, so its a great time to think about getting in shape. just start by limiting sweets and junk food and also limiting your food intake to meal times + 1 or 2 snacks per day only

it is perfectly normal to experiment and there is nothing wrong with it. but you don’t necessarily have to start calorie counting. Just watch what you eat. Make sure it’s balanced and healthy. No extra goodies or four double cheese burgers at mcdonalds… things like that. starting a good habit of exercise at 17 is the best thing you can do to prevent weight gain when your metabolism slows. Also being able to recognize when this happens, and taking action to lower your food intake when it does, will help greatly!
