low/no carb diets are surely not for everyone but for some they can be a very effective method of gaining control of body fat. there are several types of ketogenic diets depending on your level of activity. one thing is for sure they are not for the competitive athlete that is in season. restricting carbohydrates during the season will definitely have a negative effect on the performance athlete that’s in season.
do an internet search on Lyle McDonald. he’s pretty much the king of ketogenic diets. you will also have to do some research on the hormone leptin (and re-feeds) and how it relates to ketogenic diets and the fat loss process.
personally I’ve followed a low carb diet my entire lifetime. now at 40 years of age I’ve maintained single digit body fat levels my entire life. so for those that can tolerate low carb lifestyles and don’t have the tendency to binge on carbs it can be a very effective method of weight control.
